Alexander brought peace and prosperity to the world of his time.  Peace because he conquered tribes that had been warring for generations; prosperity because he put the massive treasures the Persian princes had stored away in their fabulous palaces back into circulation.  Following his death the world was divided among his generals and the world seemed to slide back to pre-Alexandrian days.  The coming of Caesar was welcomed by many as the arrival of a new Alexander.  The Roman's were a more practical people and their philosophy reflected this new approach.
